Stigma refers to a societal disapproval or misunderstanding. Stigma can include placing shame or blame on people who live with a mental illness.
Experiencing stigma can have several harmful impacts on someone who has experienced trauma including:
- Feelings of fear or shame
- Withdrawal and/or hiding from support systems
- Trying to suppress, ignore, or avoid painful symptoms
